Where Giants Fly – A Sonic Tribute to Vile Rat

Aside from maybe one or two group chats in-game during Hulkageddon and Goonswarm Shrugged, I never had the privilege of knowing Sean Smith. However, like thousands of other spaceship nerds who heard the tragic news the other day, my lack of familiarity with him personally in no way diminished the sadness of his passing. A single shard, a single game, a single love for all things internet-spaceships, we are all part of a collective in our lives within and without of Eve, and we all share the pain of a brother passing.

We all have ways of expressing emotion creatively; some of us write, some of us draw, and some, like myself, play music. In my life out of Eve Online, I’m a film composer, and so it was that after all the grief and heartfelt outpourings of condolences and camaraderie I witnessed over the past 36 hours, I found myself sitting down at my keyboard today with the beginnings of a tune in my head that I was compelled to finish.

“Where Giants Fly” is my own tribute, in my own way, to a great man both in internet spaceships and the real world. To those who knew him as a husband, a father, a son, a brother, or a friend, you have my most sincere condolences for your loss.

R.I.P. Sean.
